Welcome to Tea Olive Tree!

When two people meet for the first time a fairly predictable line of questioning follows:

  1. Hi, I’m _____________. What’s your name?
  2. Where are you from?

These should be fairly easy questions to answer and yet at different points in my life I have changed the answer to both of them. Let’s tackle the first one:

Legally speaking, my first name is Rhonda. My mom (a Navy military brat born and raised in the South) and my dad (a Palestinian born in Kuwait and transplanted in the US) wanted to choose a name that worked in both English and Arabic. They settled on “Rhonda” for my birth certificate and promptly never used it again. Instead, they called me by my Arabic name, “Runda.”

Fun fact: If people have heard you called by both Runda and Rhonda they may start to combine the names. Randa. Ruhunda. Rhundi? Brenda?

Question 2: Where are you from?

The simple answer: North Carolina! For the more complex answer, see this handy dandy graphic:

I was born in Raleigh but after my parents divorced moved around the state with my mom and younger brother. We have lived in Bertie County, Dare County, and eventually traveled across the state to Asheville.

Here I finished high school, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Literature and a 6-12 grade teaching license from UNC Asheville (go Bulldogs!). I met and married the love of my life and we now have a beautiful 8 month old baby girl. I am in my second year teaching 11th and 12th grade English in a public school. In our free time (ha-ha) we raise goats, sheep, chickens, and quail at our home in Swannanoa.

I created this blog to share my world with you. I hope you find something that resonates

I am, etc.
